Artist Statement
During the summer of 2000, I had the opportunity to spend
a month in the northern wilderness of Atlin B.C. The first
thing I noticed was the pure air. The trees were much
smaller, but essentially covered the entire landscape.
I was struck by the force of nature I experienced and
witnessed there. I became fascinated by the markings on
poplar trees, and the surface characteristics of other
species. This led to further study of trees, their
physiology, and their intricate systems for aeration and
hydration. I realize how interdependent trees and humans
are, and how similar certain aspects of their respective
systems are to each other.
The work that followed is guided by the surface textures
and vibrant colours pre-eminent in the landscape.
Abstract imagery merges with an exploration of skin,
branches, breath and porousness.
My intention is to create paintings that resonate the
essence of spirit that is so prevalent in the wilderness,
and so fleeting in our day to day lives.
